The Challenge

Despite high literacy rates among the Tibetan exile population in India, unemployment and underemployment remain huge problems (underemployment and unemployment are estimated to be as high as 60% in some settlements.)

Studies conducted by TechnoServe indicate that while citizenship issues do prevent Tibetans from being employed in certain fields, the lack of market-relevant skills and career information are often the biggest barriers to gainful employment.

The Department of Home, CTA under the banner of YES Youth empowerment Support, is taking up this project after seeing the importance of it needs and to further strengthen the demand of professionals and exploring the skill related training avenues and to create employment opportunities for the existing Tibetan youth.

Impact

Through this initiative TechnoServe with the collaboration of Central Tibetan Adminsitration and the Career Centres have placed over 500 Tibetan youth in jobs, and provided market-relevant skills training to close to 400 youth. Additionally, we have provided career guidance services to a total of 1000. Presently the Career Centers have a total of 1500 registered members across 9 Career Centers.

Presently, we have Tibetan Career Centre (TCC) with two vibrant consultants and network across to all the Tibetan settlement in India.

The Career Consultants have played a critical role in sensitizing people about the importance of career and skill training by organizing Youth Information Sessions and Parental Information Sessions in all camps of their settlements.
